A long-time Louisville resident recalls: “You could not walk three blocks in downtown Louisville without running across a bunch of kids with jugs, banjos, guitars, homemade ukuleles and an upturned washtub with a single string that was played with a bow. Also you could see plenty of adults playing on corners trying to make an extra buck and they usually had legitimate instruments plus the jug. Jugs were plentiful in this part of the country during Prohibition."...

His work on banjo, guitar and a bit of clarinet-playing with his Windy City Five provides evidence of a journeyman player making happy, good-time, energetic and delightfully listenable music. On this CD lkey demonstrates his single-string solo prowess as he splits a chorus with clarinettist Omer Simeon on the up-tempo Got Butter On lt. Then he provides solid rhythm section work on the rollicking Ready Hokum. And of course, there is the trumpet fire of Jabbo Smith to enjoy as well. Throughout these lively sides Robinson is comfortable either as a soloist or as a rhythm section man, the hallmark of jazz playing competence. Continued...

Born in the Long Island suburb Freeport, New York in 1909, Theodore Leroy Bunn was already surrounded by music, as both parents played keyboard instruments and his brother was a violinist. His first professional experience was as an accompanist to a calypso singer, but by the time he was 20 he was recording with the biggest names in the jazz field. His earliest appearance on record seems to have been the two tracks accompanying Walter Pichon included on this CD, immediately followed that same day by four tracks with Duke Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra where Bunn substituted on guitar for Fred Guy, Ellington's regular banjoist.
